Financial Journalism is a growng area

What people say about us?

“The Department of Film, Media & Journalism is, in my experience, a breed apart. This is a holistic approach to the media that refuses to ghettoise them into the narrow confines as others do in other institutions. I regard Stirling as simply the best in this regard”.

- Jon Snow, Chief Presenter, Channel Four News (UK)

“Going to Stirling allowed me to advance my career. After, studying at Stirling and returning to China I was promoted to chief reporter, covering finance and economics. The newspaper is the largest in China, with a circulation of two million”.

- Hong Tian

Chief Reporter, People’s Daily (China)

“I enjoyed very much the experience at Stirling. It provided a space to think and develop my skills. It was a great time in my life. I have now travelled around the world and have had a great experience publishing stories”

- Gary Meenaghan, Emirate Business (Dubai)

Recent financial and banking crises such as the Credit Crunch of 2008, the corporate scandals of Enron and WorldCom in the US and the nationalisation of Northern Rock in the UK, have raised awareness of the need to have journalists who can cover and analyse financial news in a critical, ethical and comprehensive manner.

Financial journalism has become one of the most exciting and important areas in the media and one of the fastest growing fields in terms of employability. Large news networks and news agencies such as Thompson/Reuters, Bloomberg and AP/Dow Jones are now expanding into audiences eager to read and know more about finance. Magazines, broadcast media, online services and press and PR departments of financial institutions and companies are also requiring journalists who can deal with the complexities of covering financial issues. The MSc/Diploma in Financial Journalism addresses this growing need, while providing the basis for journalists who are also capable of gathering and disseminating financial news in a responsible and ethical manner. It is designed for those who want to work in the field of financial journalism as journalists or press officers.

Programme curriculum:

Since this is a specialised field, which requires in-depth knowledge of financial matters and practical skills in terms of newsgathering, the programme is delivered by the Department of Accounting & Finance in conjunction with the Department of Film, Media & Journalism. Both of these are among the highest ranking departments in the United Kingdom in their respective fields and have a world-class reputation for teaching and research. These departments provide leading expertise and are highly regarded by the media and financial industries as centres of excellence.

The programme addresses both theoretical and practical areas in financial journalism, while offering a space for students to develop awareness and knowledge regarding financial issues and skills required in the newsrooms around the world. The Department of Film, Media & Journalism and the Department of Accounting and Finance have established a curriculum that suits prospective students who need to gain knowledge in both areas. It also provides a space for students looking for expertise and specialism in the area. For further information and details about this programme click here:
