I am currently completing a book on the political economy of the Hollywood film industry. I have recently published articles on celebrity and cultural politics as well as co-edited a special issue of Cultural Politics on this issue. I have also published on image rights, political communication and personality, on distribution and marketing in Hollywood and on memory and film. I am currently involved in a number of research projects including one examining political celebrity and the public engagement with politics with Dr Michael Higgins (Strathclyde) and Dr Andy Ruddock (Monash) and another on the Kate Adie archive with Dr Angela Smith (Sunderland) and Dr Michael Higgins (Strathclyde).
I have reviewed journal, book and grant proposals for numerous organisations and publishers including the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Irish Research Council of Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSRC), Open University Press, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Blackwell, John Wiley, British Journal of Canadian Studies, Scope and Cultural Politics. I have received funding from the Carnegie Trust, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), The British Academy and Scottish Enterprise. In 2007 and 2004 I was awarded Carnegie Research Grants to conduct archive research in the US on the Hollywood film studios.
In 2005 I co-organised a major international conference on Celebrity Culture (with Dr Andy Miah). This hosted a wide range of international speakers with more than 80 presentations and 100 attendees, attracting a great deal of global media interest. See http://celebrity-culture.blogspot.com for details, including the substantial media coverage as well as the archived conference website at http://www.celebrity.paisley.ac.uk. I am a founding member of the American Cinema Research Group, a network of UK based scholars working in the field. See http://americancinema.blogspot.com/ for further details. I also sit on the Steering Group for Channel Four's 4 Talent Scotland.
